To Lignan or Not To Lignan - Part 2
.We left off last week talking about SDG's, which is short for secoisolariciresinol diglucoside. SDG is the phytoestrogen lignan, it is the active component we mean when we say lignans. Flaxseed just happens to have the highest concentration of SDG of all of the known natural sources. Now let's try to dispense with the technical stuff. Bottom line is that for the last decade there have been several clinical studies on the effect of lignans on human breast tumors grown in mice. Every one of them showed a reduction in tumor growth. Now, for the last 35 years I have been preaching the benefits of flaxseed oil as a cancer killer, as per Dr Budwigs' work from 50 years ago. Did I miss the mark? Well, no, as has been shown in a more recent study where the researchers actually did a three-way clinical study of flax oil alone, lignans alone, and a combination of the two. All three shown reduction in tumor growth! Further, it pointed out that the oil was better in one area where lignans were not, and vice versa. Full disclosure, lignans won the day, showing the best result overall. So, in conclusion, the best way to approach using flax as a functional food is to use both the oil and the ground flax.* Luckily I know a good source for both! But wait, there's more. You can now get flaxseed oil in powder form! I have been monitoring with great interest the development of a method of creating a flax oil extract powder, leaving the entire nutrient content undisturbed. It has now been perfected and we are one of the first to bring it to you! Just like we did 35 years ago with the oil. But first isn't what makes us best, our attention to quality is. This form of flax oil has many advantages over liquid, not the least of which is it's ability to be handled without degradation to the content. It keeps longer, stores easier, packages easier, cheaper to ship, the list goes on. And rest assured it has the exact same omega fat 3, 6,9 content plus it's easy to premix with ground flax and flax catalyst powder. So check it out today! I've include a link to all of our flax products below.
