Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men. The American Cancer Society’s estimates for prostate cancer in the United States for 2017 are:
Prostate cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer and colorectal cancer. About 1 man in 39 will die of prostate cancer.
Prostate cancer can be a serious disease, but most men diagnosed with prostate cancer do not die from it. In fact, more than 2.9 million men in the United States who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point are still alive today.
It is related to us by Michael Greger M.D FACLM, the founder of Nutritionfacts.org . Some of it is very dry and clinical but we will sum it up here in laymen's terms.
In the first study, men with prostate cancer were given flaxseed lignans every day for 5 weeks. The results were amazing, in that there was a 100% success rate in the reduction of cancer markers and increase in cancer cell deaths.
In the second study a few years later, a group of 15 men with biopsies that showed early-stage prostate cancer were fed 3 tablespoons of ground flaxseed meal per day for 6 months before having a second biopsy. Again, all showed a significant drop in cancer marker and in fact, 2 had dropped below the scale where a second biopsy wasn't needed!
Why flaxseed? Ground Flaxseeds have as much as 800 times more of the cancer killing lignans than any other food. Lignans contain the phytoestrogens found to be prevalent in the diets of other countries where the incidence of prostate cancer is low. So the bottom line is that if you are a man over age 40, you should add a high-quality ground flaxseed to your diet every day. For more about ground flaxseeds, visit Bionatures Vita-Flax page HERE
